"divine deli"

Here is a pretty good article that touches on the confused state of religious relativism and pluralism in this country.

-As a scholar of religion, I am supposed to simply observe all this without rendering any judgment, but I can't help feeling that something precious is being lost here, perhaps something as fundamental as a sense of the sacred. Harvard philosopher George Santayana once observed that "American life is a powerful solvent," capable of neutralizing new ideas into banal clichés.....
So much for the jealous God. A survey released earlier this year by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life found that the U.S. is a "nation of religious drifters." If, in the realm of love, Americans gravitate toward serial monogamy (moving from marriage to divorce to remarriage and so on), we likewise flit from one religious affiliation to another, pledging our fidelity, say, to Methodism in our youth, Catholicism in middle age and Episcopalianism in our dotage.
A new Pew study, released last week, shows that Americans are swingers as well as switchers, flirting with religious beliefs and practices other than their own without officially changing their religious affiliation. Catholic leaders have long denounced "Cafeteria Catholics" for going down the line and picking and choosing the Catholic beliefs and practices they choose to uphold. According to this new study, Americans as a group are now bellying up to what my Boston University colleague John Berthrong has referred to as the "divine deli."
Not counting travel, or special events such as weddings and funerals, more than one-third of Americans attend worship services at more than one place, and nearly a quarter attend services held by another religion. Much of this religious infidelity happens in the family, or within the extended family—Lutherans attending Baptist services or Baptists attending Catholic Mass. But among black Protestants 8% attend services at synagogues, and 5% of this same group go to mosques. Meanwhile, large numbers of American Christians affirm beliefs that their theologians have long denounced as heretical: 23% believe in astrology, 22% in reincarnation and 21% in yoga as a spiritual practice.

Leadership.

“The fact that I disagree with the hierarchy on some issues does not make me any less of a Catholic.” (Congressman Patrick Kennedy)

We hear different versions of this statement among Catholics worldwide from high ranking politicians to the regular pew-sitters like you and me. Statements like this admit to a perceived detachment between what the Church teaches officially and what the faithful are obliged to follow. Nobody is saying that you can't intellectually disagree with some teaching of the church. Although most disagreements toward church teachings seem to be emotionally or morally based rather than intellectual. People don't want to change the way they live their lives. Nobody is saying to follow blindly. What is important is that you follow official teachings. You may disagree with Church teaching on contraception for example. Well, you are still expected to follow what the church says. In the meantime you need to explore the reasoning behind the teaching so that you can come to understand better why the church teaches what it does. Put in the time and do the research. This is the part that many Catholics refuse to do. The result is a cafeteria approach to the faith where people pick and choose what they want to believe. Usually they do so with an ignorance of the reasoning and full understanding of church teaching. Personal beliefs then trump what the Church founded by Christ Himself teaches. Yeah, you can see the problem.

This is a Bishop doing what he is supposed to do. As the local leader of his flock, it is his job to call attention to and correct the scandalous public behavior of this wayward "catholic" politician. Politicians who call themselves Catholic and yet publicly dissent from official teachings of the church such as with abortion need to be corrected.  This will go a long way in at least sparking discussion among Catholics who feel it's perfectly acceptable to pick and choose which Church teachings they want to agree with while still remaining "faithful" or " in good standing with the church". It doesn't work that way. There is no room for 'cafeteria catholicism'.  People need to explore why the pick and choose approach to the faith is false. The Catholic Church is the Church given the task of proclaiming the truth of Christ. If you disagree with the church on doctrinal issues, ultimately you disagree with Christ.  That's a hard pill for some people to swallow but it's the truth.  Here we see the Bishop pointing out error with love and genuine compassion.

Fireworks: Bishop Tobin escalates episcopal correction of Rep. Kennedy

Congressman Kennedy picked the wrong Bishop to mess with.

The back-and-forth between Congressman Patrick Kennedy and Bishop Thomas Tobin of Providence, RI has been interesting to watch, especially because Kennedy has attempted to defend himself with every old, tired argument in the liberal playbook.

Bishop Tobin's most recent round, however, published in the Rhode Island Catholic newspaper, is a grand slam.

Because I'm a spoiler, I'm going to quote the last part of Bishop Tobin's public letter to Kennedy - but you should take the time and read the whole thing:
"Your rejection of the Church’s teaching on abortion falls into a different category – it’s a deliberate and obstinate act of the will; a conscious decision that you’ve re-affirmed on many occasions. Sorry, you can’t chalk it up to an “imperfect humanity.” Your position is unacceptable to the Church and scandalous to many of our members. It absolutely diminishes your communion with the Church.

Congressman Kennedy, I write these words not to embarrass you or to judge the state of your conscience or soul. That’s ultimately between you and God. But your description of your relationship with the Church is now a matter of public record, and it needs to be challenged. I invite you, as your bishop and brother in Christ, to enter into a sincere process of discernment, conversion and repentance. It’s not too late for you to repair your relationship with the Church, redeem your public image, and emerge as an authentic “profile in courage,” especially by defending the sanctity of human life for all people, including unborn children. And if I can ever be of assistance as you travel the road of faith, I would be honored and happy to do so."
Next step: official censure or excommunication. Rep. Kennedy has now been publicly rebuked and invited to convert and offer repentance.

Mr. Kennedy, stop while you're behind. Repent, and be reconciled. You're out of other options.

Unfortunately, at this point, Mr. Kennedy has broken off his planned meeting with Bishop Tobin. Whatever Kennedy may be thinking, that's not the right way to set things right.

Your own personal Jesus.

I very much agree with this message.  I run into these so called "Catholics" all the time. I read their articles in "Catholic"  magazines and blogs. I debate them on message boards and through letters to the editor. It seems fashionable nowadays to claim Catholicity and and the same time preach a much different set of beliefs and values.  There are plenty of Nancy Pelosi type "ardent Catholics" who seem to be quite ignorant of authentic Church teaching.  Then there are those who claim their personal agenda driven version of the Catholic faith is "more in line with todays faithful".  However, when challenged to provide a reasoned justification for their novel views within the framework of the actual deposit of faith held by authentic Catholics, these dissenters stumble over their words and misquote scripture or the Saints of the Church. There is no basis of support for their views within the vast teachings of the Church in scripture, tradition, or magesterial teachings. They have to make things up based on nothing more than the authority of their own opinion which is fueled by agendas and the popular culture.

So, keep this in mind the next time you hear that" the majority of Catholics polled support" ...(whatever anti-Catholic issue is being discussed).  Maybe the poll should be qualified with dissenting and uneducated Catholics.

There is nothing more unfaithful then to create ones own set of antithetical personal doctrines and then try and impose them on the authentic truths of the Church.  These self styled 'wiser-than- 2,000 years of Church teaching and tradition' Catholics are a modern spin off of the pick and choose what you want to believe "cafeteria Catholics".

The Church is not a democracy. The truths of its teachings in faith and morals are not dependent on popular opinion or majority vote. Look a little deeper and you will begin to understand why this is.

Peace.

Where Did The Bible Come From? Part III

In this final installment of the Bible history series, Catholic Apologist Michael Voris sets forth 4 propositions in defense of the Catholic Church as the one true Church of Jesus Christ. Paraphrased....  "Refute even one of these propositions and I will close up shop at St. Michael's Media and renounce my Roman Catholic faith." In good conscience I would have to because it would prove that I am worshiping in the wrong church."

This video was shot in 2007 and St. Michaels media is still in business and Michael Voris is still very Catholic so here is a good chance for my protestant friends to get Mr. Voris "off the Catholic."

These types of challenges can be great because in order to try and meet such a challenge, you have to do a lot of study and research.  I have found that in situations like this, when you do the research yourself at your own pace, the results have a much greater impact than someone simply telling you something.

Pillar of Fire, Pillar of Truth Part 4.

It's been awhile since I have posted one of these. This is copied from http://www.catholic.com   I have found that this short tract has a nice summary of many Catholic teachings.

Pillar of Fire, Pillar of truth part 3.

A continuation of some basic truths of the Catholic faith.  This helps give people a general idea of Catholicism. This short section deals with the primacy of the Apostle Peter. It is Catholic teaching that Peter was the first in a line of Popes that continues to this day. Thus Pope Benedict can trace back his lineage and authority all the way back to the Apostle Peter himself.  The truth of apostolic succession deals with the handing on of the faith and the office of Bishop from the time of Jesus until present day. Thus the apostles of Jesus taught the faith to others in a certain geographic area. They also ordained Bishops in these areas who were to continue to faithfully pass on the faith to others and so on.....Thus for example, a Bishop here in the Diocese of Detroit can trace back his authority in the Catholic Church to the apostles of Jesus.  Non CAtholic Christians not in communion with Rome do not have apostolic succession and thus do not have a true ministerial priesthood.  Ever wonder why protestant faiths only have 2 sacraments(usually baptism and matrimony) if any at all?   You need validly ordained priests to perform 5 of the 7 sacraments.

Pillar of Fire, Pillar of Truth Part 2.

These are the four marks of the Church: 1. The Church is one  2. The Church is Holy  3. The Church is Catholic  4. The Church is Apostolic.  Each mark of the Church is a discussion by itself. The purpose here is to give a brief introduction to some basic Catholic teachings.  The abbreviations used are either Bible passages or sections from the Catechism of The Catholic Church (CCC).

Pillar of Fire, Pillar of Truth

I'm on a roll today.. you can tell I have the day off!  So, here is a repost of an article I put on this blog several months ago. It is a helpful summary and relates to the previous post.  Taken from http://www.catholic.com

WHETHER or not you are Catholic, you may have questions about the Catholic faith. You may have heard challenges to the Catholic Church’s claim to be the interpreter and safeguard of the teachings of Jesus Christ.

Such challenges come from door-to-door missionaries who ask, "Are you saved?", from peer pressure that urges you to ignore the Church’s teachings, from a secular culture that whispers "There is no God."

You can’t deal with these challenges unless you understand the basics of the Catholic faith. This booklet introduces them to you.

In Catholicism you will find answers to life’s most troubling questions: Why am I here? Who made me? What must I believe? How must I act? All these can be answered to your satisfaction, if only you will open yourself to God’s grace, turn to the Church he established, and follow his plan for you (John 7:17).

Part 1. Unbroken History.

Church shoppin'

Been religion shopping lately?

This article reminds me of many conversations I have had with people who were trying to find "the right church for me".  Frequently, people simply shop around their geographic area in order to find a church that will "suit my needs" rather than research a church/ faith history and authoritative foundation by which it stands by its teachings.  With the seemingly never ending division of Protestant churches....I think the last count is somewhere around 35,000 denominations, it isn't surprising that people feel the need to shop around.  What always amazes me is what people consider important attributes of the 'church' they are seeking in order to "suit their needs". I would think that truth and authenticity would be the highest priority when seeking out a church.  As the first step in in 'church shopping', shouldn't you ask yourself why you are searching for a 'church' at all?  What is it that you are looking for?  If the answer is wrapped up in things like fellowship, a nice sounding choir, or teachings that are convenient to ones lifestyle, perhaps you should spend your time searching out a social club or maybe join a community group rather than a 'church'.   For these social groups or clubs could serve to meet your needs without running the risk of belonging to a false church.

If your goal in joining a church is to seek out truth in a relationship with Jesus, then your journey should take you towards the Church that best reflects what Jesus taught and commanded while he walked the earth.  Jesus clearly established a Church during his ministry. He defined a hierarchical structure of authority within his Church.  He initiated Sacraments, gave teachings on how to live a good and moral life, and showed humanity how to attain supernatural life with him in heaven.  The teachings and Sacraments of Jesus are from a divine source and by virtue of this cannot change. Changing cultural attitudes over time cannot alter the truth...the divine truth of what Jesus Christ, the second person of the Trinity taught and commanded.  So then, where can you find the same truth as taught by Jesus Christ himself?  Well, of course in the Church he established 2000 years ago....The Catholic Church.

Many people choose a 'church' for all the wrong reasons...many of which are bound up in pride and selfishness. Others create their own religion and adopt the 'spiritual' but not religious angle. As if making up ones own truth has any real significance.  Truth is truth whether or not one believes it. Truth is not subject to personal opinion or majority rule. I could tomorrow establish MY own church around the idea of Zorcon the space god.  Why would my 'church' have any less validity than someone pridefully following 'their own version of truth'? ...or even one of the 35,000 Protestant Christian denominations founded by fallible men who make up doctrines, twist scripture to meet their needs, and ignore whole passages of the one and only thing they say they need for salvation....The BIBLE!    See how confusing it can be for someone who doesn't know the history of the Church Jesus established? Jesus founded one Church. He didn't found 35,000 christian churches all interpreting His Divine Word written in scripture in a way that "suits their own needs".  35,000 contradictory versions of the truth?  ....I don't think so.

This went longer than I thought it would. As usual, I didn't do much editing on this. I will post the article separately under a cut.

Take care.
